Putting Ash to Bed

Some ash wood came my way recently.

Riving handle blanks from the but end of the stem.
Further up, planks for furniture perhaps.

First preparations.

Shredding paraffin.
Shredding paraffin.
Then cautiously melting it down.

And coating the end grain.
And coating the end grain after stickering.

  1. Still plugged into the world wide network then are you Sebastian?

It’s always a matter of wait and see and hope for the best when you start like this with wood, so much depending on the its drying at a constant rate throughout and with this section coming from high up, more that six meters, it makes for even more uncertain. Some nice figure is apparent in the picture but that can indicate wryly grain and a tendency to warp. I’ve done all I can though, putting some staples in the end grain and a thick coating of paraffin, thin stickering and stacking it out of the wind under the apple tree. So I will wait for a year and then go back to it for a look.
